1. Shirt
Meaning: a long- or short-sleeved garment for the upper part of the body, usually lightweight and having a collar and a front opening
French: chemise
Exemple: Can I borrow your black shirt? (Puis-je emprunter votre chemise noire?)
2. Pants
Meaning: a large bird, the male of which has very long tail feathers that it can spread out to show bright colours and patterns shaped like eyes
French: pantalon
Exemple: You need to buy new pants for yourself. (Vous devez acheter un nouveau pantalon pour vous-même.)
3. T-shirt
Meaning: a lightweight, usually knitted, pullover shirt, close-fitting and with a round neckline and short sleeves, worn as an undershirt or outer garment
French: tee-shirt
Exemple: She wore her favorite t-shirt till it tore. (Elle portait son t-shirt préféré jusqu’à ce qu’il se déchire.)
4. Cardigan:
Meaning: a usually collarless knitted sweater or jacket that opens down the front
French: cardigan
Exemple: It’s going to be cold, please carry your cardigan. (Il va faire froid, veuillez porter votre cardigan.)
5. Tuxedo:
Meaning: a man’s jacket for semi formal evening dress, traditionally of black or dark-blue color and characteristically having satin or grosgrain facing on the lapels
French: smoking
Exemple: He looked handsome in a tuxedo. (Il avait l’air beau dans un smoking.)
6. Dress:
Meaning: an outer garment for women and girls, consisting of bodice and skirt in one piece
French: robe
Exemple: He gifted her a dress for their anniversary. (Il lui a offert une robe pour leur anniversaire.)
7. Blouse:
Meaning: a usually lightweight, loose-fitting garment for women and children, covering the body from the neck or shoulders more or less to the waistline, with or without a collar and sleeves, worn inside or outside a skirt, slacks, etc.
French: chemisier
Exemple: I don’t know which blouse I should wear today. (Je ne sais pas quel chemisier je devrais porter aujourd’hui.)
8. Jacket:
Meaning: a short coat, in any of various forms, usually opening down the front.
French: veste
Exemple: She wore the jacket to look classy in pictures. (Elle portait la veste pour avoir l’air chic en images.)
9. Trousers:
Meaning: a usually loose-fitting outer garment for the lower part of the body, having individual leg portions that reach typically to the ankle but sometimes to any of various other points from the upper leg down
French: pantalon
Exemple: I don’t have any formal trousers for the event. (Je n’ai pas de pantalon formel pour l’événement.)
10. Jumpsuit:
Meaning: a garment fashioned to usually combine a shirt or bodice with shorts or trousers in one piece
French: combinaison
Exemple: Why don’t you wear the jumpsuit for your event tomorrow? (Pourquoi ne portez-vous pas la combinaison pour votre événement de demain?)
11. Sweatshirt:
Meaning: a loose, long-sleeved, collarless pullover of soft, absorbent fabric, as cotton jersey, with close-fitting or elastic cuffs and sometimes a drawstring at the waist, commonly worn during athletic activity for warmth or to induce sweating
French: sweat-shirt
Exemple: Sweatshirts are the most comfortable piece of clothing. (Les sweat-shirts sont les vêtements les plus confortables.)
12. Swimsuit:
Meaning: a garment worn for swimming.
French: maillot de bain
Exemple: The baby wore a cute mermaid swimsuit at the beach. (Le bébé portait un joli maillot de bain sirène à la plage.)
13. Pajama:
Meaning: clothing for wearing in bed, consisting of usually loose-fitting pants or shorts and matching top
French: pyjama
Exemple: She was so tired she didn’t have time to change into her pajamas. (Elle était tellement fatiguée qu’elle n’a pas eu le temps de mettre son pyjama.)
14. Tracksuit:
Meaning: a sweat suit, usually with a long-sleeved jacket and long pants, worn by athletes, especially runners, before and after actual competition or during workouts.
French: survêtement
Exemple: He exercised wearing his tracksuit. (Il a exercé en portant son survêtement.)
15. Tank Top:
Meaning: a close-fitting, low-cut top having shoulder straps and often made of lightweight, knitted fabric.
French: débardeur
Exemple: Lucy doesn’t like wearing tank tops.(Lucy n’aime pas porter des débardeurs.)
