1. Atmosphere [at-muhs-feer]
Meaning – the mixture of gases around the earth
French – atmosphère
Example: The atmosphere is cleaner than it used to be.(L’atmosphère est plus propre qu’auparavant.)
2.Biodegradable [bahy-oh-di-grey-duh-buh]
Meaning – able to decay naturally and in a way that is not harmful
French – biodégradable
Example: She always segregated biodegradable and nonbiodegradable waste.(Elle a toujours séparé les déchets biodégradables et non biodégradables.)
3.Biodiversity [bahy-oh-di-vur-si-tee ]
Meaning- the number and types of plants and animals that exist in a particular area or in the world generally, or the problem of protecting this:
French – biodiversité
Example: The extinction of animals is a threat to biodiversity.(L’extinction des animaux est une menace pour la biodiversité.)
4.Biosphere [bahy-uh-sfeer]
Meaning -the part of the earth’s environment where life exists
French – biosphère
Example: He lived only in one geographical area, so was exposed to only a part of the biosphere.(Il ne vivait que dans une zone géographique, il n’était donc exposé qu’à une partie de la biosphère.)
5.Carbon [kahr-buh n ]
Meaning -a chemical element that exists in its pure form as diamond or graphite, and is an important part of other substances such as coal and oil, as well as being contained in all plants and animals
French – carbone
Example: Enormous carbon emissions are a threat to the environment.(D’énormes émissions de carbone constituent une menace pour l’environnement.)
6.Carbon dioxide [kahr-buh n dahy-ok-sahyd ]
Meaning – the gas formed when carbon is burned, or when people or animals breathe out
French – dioxyde de carbone
Example: Plants are saving humans by inhaling carbon dioxide.(Les plantes sauvent les humains en inhalant du dioxyde de carbone.)
7.Climate [klahy-mit ]
Meaning – the general weather conditions usually found in a particular place
French – climat
Example: The climate has been a little off lately.(Le climat s’est un peu dégradé ces derniers temps.)
8.Earthquake [urth-kweyk ]
Meaning – a sudden violent movement of the earth’s surface, sometimes causing great damage
French – tremblement de terre
Example: An earthquake can destroy many buildings in seconds.(Un tremblement de terre peut détruire de nombreux bâtiments en quelques secondes.)
9.Ecosystem [ek-oh-sis-tuh m ]
Meaning -all the living things in an area and the way they affect each other and the environment
French – écosystème
Example: Water is an important element of the ecosystem for the survival of humans.(L’eau est une partie importante de l’écosystème pour la survie humaine.)
10.Endangered [en-deyn-jerd ]
Meaning -in danger of being harmed, lost, unsuccessful, etc.
French – en voie d’extinction
Example: The Dodo birds are one of the most endangered species in the world.(Les oiseaux Dodo sont l’une des espèces les plus menacées au monde)
11. Erosion [ih-roh-zhuh n]
Meaning – the fact of soil, stone, etc. being gradually damaged and removed by the waves, rain, or wind
French – érosion
Example: Soil erosion affects the growth of plants in the environment.(L’érosion du sol affecte la croissance des plantes dans l’environnement.)
12.Famine [fam-in ]
Meaning -a situation in which there is not enough food for a great number of people, causing illness and death, or a particular period when this happens
French – famine
Example: There was a great famine in Rome.(Il y avait une grande famine à Rome.)
13.Global warming [gloh-buh l wawrming]
Meaning – a gradual increase in world temperatures caused by gases such as carbon dioxide that are collecting in the air around the earth and stopping heat escaping into space
French – réchauffement de la planète
Example: To stop the meltdown we must slow global warming.(Pour arrêter la fonte des neiges, nous devons ralentir le réchauffement climatique.)
14.Greenhouse effect [green-hous ih-fekt]
Meaning -an increase in the amount of carbon dioxide and other gases in the atmosphere (= mixture of gases around the earth), that is believed to be the cause of a gradual warming of the surface of the earth
French – effet de serre
Example: It is indisputable now that humans are changing the earth’s climate via the enhanced greenhouse effect. (Il est incontestable maintenant que les humains modifient le climat de la Terre via l’effet de serre accru.)
15.Ozone layer – [oh-zohn ley-er ]
Meaning – a layer of air containing ozone high above the earth that prevents harmful ultraviolet light from the sun from reaching the earth
French – la couche d’ozone
Example: Without the ozone layer, life will cease to exist on Earth.(Sans la couche d’ozone, la vie cessera d’exister sur Terre.)
16.Oxygen [ok-si-juh n ]
Meaning -a chemical element that is a gas with no smell or colour. Oxygen forms a large part of the air on earth, and is needed by animals and plants to live
French – oxygène
Example: Humans need oxygen to survive.(Les humains ont besoin d’oxygène pour survivre.)
17. Pollution [puh-loo-shuh n ]
Meaning -damage caused to water, air, etc. by harmful substances or waste
French – pollution
Example: Pollution has made it difficult for people to lead a normal life.(La pollution a rendu difficile pour les gens de mener une vie normale.)
18. Renewable – [ ri-noo ey-buhl ]
Meaning – Renewable forms of energy can be produced as quickly as they are use
French – renouvelable
Example – Solar energy is a renewable energy source. (L’énergie solaire est une source d’énergie renouvelable.)
