Meaning: a machine that keeps the air in a building cool.
French: climatiseur

2. Backyard – [ bak–yahrd ]
Meaning – a space at the back of a house, usually surrounded by a fence, and covered with grass

3. Barbecue – [ bahr-bi-kyoo ]
Meaning – metal frame on which meat, fish, or vegetables are cooked outdoors over a fire

4. Basement – [ beys-muh nt ]
Meaning – a part of a building consisting of rooms that are partly or completely below the level of the ground
French: Sous-sol
Kids usually play in the basement. (Les enfants jouent généralement au sous-sol.)
5. Bathroom – [ bahth-room ]
Meaning: a room with a toilet in it
French: – Salle de bains
You can refresh yourself in the bathroom. (Vous pouvez vous rafraîchir dans la salle de bain.)
6. Bathtub – [ bahth – tuhb ]
Meaning – a long plastic, metal, or ceramic container that is filled with water so that you can sit or lie in it to wash your whole body
French – Baignoire
He likes to read in the bathtub. (Il aime lire dans la baignoire.)
7. Bedroom – [ bed-room ]
Meaning – a room used for sleeping in
French Chambre à coucher
She rested in her bedroom for a while. (Elle s’est reposée dans sa chambre à coucher pendant un moment.)
8. Broom – [ broo m ]
Meaning – a brush with a long handle, used for cleaning the floor
French – balai
She cleaned the house with a broom. (Elle a nettoyé la maison avec un balai.)
9. Bunk bed – [ buhngk bed ]
Meaning – one of two beds attached together, one on top of the other
French – lit superposé
The children were happy to see their new bunk beds. (Les enfants étaient heureux de voir leurs nouveaux lits superposés.)
10. Closet –
Meaning – a cupboard or a small room with a door, used for storing things, especially clothes
French – placard
Her closet was filled with all things pink. (Son placard était rempli de tout ce qui était rose.)
11. Cupboard – [ kloz-it ]
Meaning – a piece of furniture or a small part of a room with a door or doors behind which there is space for storing things, usually on shelves
French – placard
There was no empty place for extra clothes in his cupboard. (Il n’y avait pas d’espace vide pour des vêtements supplémentaires dans son placard.)
12. Dining room – [ dahyning room ]
Meaning: a room in which meals are eaten
French – Salle à manger
They all gathered in the dining room for supper.(Ils se sont tous réunis dans la salle à manger pour souper.)
13. Furniture – [ fur-ni-cher ]
Meaning- things such as chairs, tables, beds, cupboards, etc. that are put into a house or other building to make it suitable and comfortable for living or working in
French – meuble
The vintage hotel had furniture as old as a hundred years. (L’hôtel vintage avait des meubles centenaires.)
14. Hall – [ hawl ]
Meaning – the area just inside the main entrance of a house, apartment, or other building that leads to other rooms and usually to the stairs
French: Salle
They all sat in the hall to watch a movie.(Ils se sont tous assis dans la salle pour regarder un film.)
15. Key – [ kee ]
Meaning – a piece of metal that has been cut into a special shape and is used for opening or closing a lock, starting a car engine, etc.
French – Clé
She forgot the house keys inside in a hurry.(Elle a oublié les clés de la maison à l’intérieur en toute hâte.)
16. Kitchen – [ kich–uh n ]
Meaning – a room where food is kept, prepared, and cooked and where the dishes are washed
French – Cuisine
Mom spends most of her time in the kitchen cooking for us. (Maman passe la plupart de son temps dans la cuisine à cuisiner pour nous.)
17. Shelf – [ shelf ]
Meaning: a long, flat board fixed horizontally, usually against a wall or inside a cupboard so that objects can be stored on it
French: Étagère
Her book shelf had books of all the genres.(Son étagère avait des livres de tous les genres.)
18. Shower – [ shou-er ]
Meaning – a device that releases drops of water through a lot of very small holes and that you stand under to wash your whole body
French- douche
He is always too lazy to take a shower.(Il est toujours trop paresseux pour prendre une douche.)
19. Sink – [ singk ]
Meaning: a bowl that is attached to the wall in a kitchen or bathroom in which you wash dishes or your hands,
French: Évier
They put the used vessels in the sink. (Ils ont mis les récipients utilisés dans l’évier.)
