Vocabulary related to Sea Animals in French

1. Le dauphin

Meaning: a sea mammal that is large, smooth, and grey, with a long, pointed mouth

English: dolphin

Example: Avez-vous vu un spectacle de dauphins? (Have you seen a dolphin show?)

2. Le requin

Meaning: a large fish that has sharp teeth and a pointed fin on its back

English: shark

Example: Elle avait peur de voir un requin. (She was scared of seeing a shark.)

3. La baleine

Meaning: a very large sea mammal that breathes air through a hole at the top of its head

English: whale

Example: Une baleine géante a été trouvée près du rivage de la mer. (A giant whale was found near the shore of the sea.)

4. Le crabe

Meaning: a sea creature with five pairs of legs and a round, flat body covered by a shell, or its flesh eaten as food

English: crab

5. Le pingouin 

Meaning :a black and white bird that cannot fly but uses its small wings to help it swim

English: penguin

Example: Les pingouins sont très mignons. (Penguins are very cute.)

6. L’étoile de mer

Meaning: a flat animal that lives in the sea and has five arms that grow from its body in the shape of a star

English: starfish

Example: C’est étrange à quel point les étoiles de mer ressemblent à des étoiles. (It’s strange how starfishes resemble stars. )

7. La méduse

Meaning: a sea creature with a soft, oval, almost transparent body

English: jellyfish

Example: Il a été piqué par une méduse. (He was stung by a jellyfish.)

8. Un phoque

Meaning: a large mammal that eats fish and lives partly in the sea and partly on land or ice

English: seal

Example: Ils ont navigué devant un groupe de phoques. (They sailed past a group of seals.)

9. Hippocampe

Meaning : a small fish that swims in a vertical position and has a head like that of a horse

English: seahorse

Example:Un hippocampe peut manger jusqu’à 3000 saumons par jour. (A seahorse can eat up to 3000 brine fish a single day.)

10. Pieuvre 

Meaning: a sea creature with a soft, oval body and eight tentacles 

English: octopus

Example: Une pieuvre qui change constamment de couleur est saine. (An octopus that is constantly changing color is a healthy one.)

11. Poisson rouge

Meaning : a small, shiny, gold or orange fish that is often kept as a pet in a bowl or garden pool

English: goldfish

Example: Sa mère lui a offert un poisson rouge comme animal de compagnie. (Her mother gifted her a goldfish as a pet.)

12. Piranha

Meaning: a dangerous fish that lives in South American rivers, has sharp teeth, and eats meat

English: piranha

Example: Vous pouvez trouver de nombreuses espèces différentes de piranha. (You can find many different species of the piranha.) 

13. Morse

Meaning: a mammal that lives in the sea and on beaches in the Arctic. It is similar to a seal but larger, with two tusks and long hairs growing near its mouth.

English: Walrus

Example: Elle a eu peur quand un morse l’a suivie sur le rivage. (She was scared when a walrus followed her to the shore.) 

14. L’anguille

Meaning: a long, thin, snake-like fish, some types of which are eaten

English: eel

Example: La pêche à l’anguille n’est pas autorisée ici. (Eel fishing is not allowed here.)

15. La Palourd

Meaning: a type of sea creature with a shell in two parts that can close together tightly, and a soft body that can be eaten

English: clam

Example: Avez-vous déjà mangé une palourde? (Have you ever eaten a clam?)
