1. Square [ skwair ]
Meaning: a flat shape with four sides of equal length and four angles of 90°
French: carré/e
He had a square shaped tiffin box. (Il avait une boîte en forme de tiffin carrée.)
2. Rectangle [ rek-tang-guh l ]
Meaning – a flat shape with four 90° angles and four sides, with opposite sides of equal length
French – rectangle
The area of a rectangle is its height times its width. (L’aire d’un rectangle est sa hauteur multipliée par sa largeur.)
3. Circle [ sur-kuhl ]
Meaning – a continuous curved line, the points of which are always the same distance away from a fixed central point, or the area inside such a line
French – cercle
She cut out circles to make a flower. (Elle a découpé des cercles pour faire une fleur.)
4. Triangle [ trahy-ang-guh l ]
Meaning: a flat shape with three straight sides
French: – triangle
She has a collection of various triangle earrings. (Elle a une collection de diverses boucles d’oreilles trianglulaires.)
5. Pyramid [ pir–uh-mid ]
Meaning – a solid object with a square base and four triangular sides that form a point at the top
French – pyramide
Can you make a pyramid with playing cards? (Pouvez-vous faire une pyramide avec des cartes de jeu?)
6. Hexagon [ hek-suh-gon ]
Meaning – a flat shape with six straight sides
French – hexagone
France is in the shape of a hexagon. (La France a la forme d’un hexagone.)
7. Sphere [ sfeer ]
Meaning – an object shaped like a round ball
French – sphère
There was a shining sphere at the centre of the party hall. (Il y avait une sphère brillante au centre de la salle des fêtes.)
8. Cone [ kohn ]
Meaning – a shape with a flat, round or oval base and a top that becomes narrower until it forms a point
French – cône
Why is the ice cream served in a cone? (Pourquoi la glace est-elle servie dans un cône?)
9. Parallelogram [ par-uh–lel–uh-gram ]
Meaning – a flat shape that has four sides. The two sets of opposite sides are parallel and of equal length to each other.
French – parallélogramme
They designed the artificial legs of a robot in the form of a parallelogram. (Ils ont conçu les jambes artificielles d’un robot sous la forme d’un parallélogramme.)
10. Trapezium [ truh–pee-zee-uh m ]
Meaning – a flat shape with four sides, where two of the sides are parallel
French – trapèze
The room had weird corridors in the shape of a trapezium. (La pièce avait d’étranges couloirs en forme de trapèze.)
11. Oval [ oh-vuh l ]
Meaning: shaped like a circle that is flattened so that it is like an egg or an ellipse
French – ovale
She always drew a circle like an oval. (Elle dessinait toujours un cercle comme un ovale.)
12. Star [ stahr ]
Meaning- a symbol with five or more points
French – étoile
The pre-primary teacher drew a star for all the kids on their hands. (L’enseignant du préprimaire a dessiné une étoile pour tous les enfants sur leurs mains.)
13. Semicircle [ sem-i-sur-kuh l ]
Meaning – half a circle
French: demi-cercle
They arranged the tables in a semicircle. (Ils ont disposé les tables en demi-cercle.)
14. Pentagon [ pen-tuh-gon ]
Meaning – a shape with five sides and five angles
French: pentagone
She made an irregular pentagon with all sides different. (Elle a fait un pentagone irrégulier avec tous les côtés différents.)
15. Ellipse [ ih-lips ]
Meaning – a curve in the shape of an oval
French: ellipse
Don’t confuse an ellipse for a circle. (Ne confondez pas une ellipse avec un cercle.)
