Supernatural Vocabulary in French

How many of you like to listen to supernatural stories? Or are fond of reading such stories? In this article, you will come across some words that one uses in supernatural stories in French. 

1. La fée 

Meaning: one of a class of supernatural beings, generally conceived as having a diminutive human form and possessing magical powers with which they intervene in human affairs

English: fairy 

Example: Pensez-vous que les fées existent? (Do you believe fairies exist?)

2. Le loup-garou

Meaning: a human being who has changed into a wolf, or is capable of assuming the form of a wolf, while retaining human intelligence

English: werewolf

Example: Il s’est transformé en loup-garou toutes les nuits. (He turned into a werewolf every night.)

3. La licorne

Meaning: a mythical creature resembling a horse, with a single horn in the center of its forehead: often symbolic of chastity or purity

English: unicorn

Example: Toutes ses affaires ont été personnalisées pour avoir des licornes. (All her stuff was customised to have unicorns.)

4. Le dragon

Meaning: a mythical monster generally represented as a huge, winged reptile with crested head and enormous claws and teeth, and often spouting fire

English: dragon

Example: L’enfant avait peur de voir un dragon dans le parc d’attractions. (The kid was scared of seeing a dragon in the amusement park.)

5. Le démon 

Meaning :an evil spirit; devil or fiend

English: demon 

Example: Elle m’a transformé en démon. (She turned me into a demon.)

6. Le fantome 

Meaning: the soul of a dead person, a disembodied spirit imagined, usually as a vague, shadowy or evanescent form, as wandering among or haunting living persons

English: ghost

Example: Avez-vous déjà rencontré un fantôme? (Have you ever encountered a ghost?)

7. La magie

Meaning: the art of producing illusions as entertainment by the use of sleight of hand, deceptive devices, etc.

English: magic

Example: Les enfants ont été amusés par la magie montrée par le magicien. (The kids were amused by the magic shown by the magicien.)

8. L’ombre

Meaning: a dark figure or image cast on the ground or some surface by a body intercepting light

English: shadow

Example: Il sentit une ombre le suivre toute la nuit. (He felt a shadow follow him through the night.)

9. Effrayant 

Meaning : to make afraid or fearful; throw into a fright; terrify; scare

English: frightening 

Example: Il a vécu l’expérience la plus effrayante de sa vie lors de son voyage en Égypte. (He had the most frightening experience of his life while on his trip to Egypt.)

10. Charmant

Meaning: pleasing, delightful

English: charming

Example: Elle attendait que son charmant prince arrive. (She was waiting for her charming prince to arrive.)

11. Fantaisiste

Meaning : unusual and strange in a way that might be funny or annoying

English: whimsical

Example: Ma petite fille s’engage parfois dans une conversation fantaisiste avec sa poupée. (My little daughter engages in a whimsical conversation with her doll at times.)

12. Malfaisant

Meaning: morally wrong or bad

English: wicked

Example: Parce qu’elle n’avait aucune morale, la malfaisante femme a fait du mal à tous ceux qu’il rencontrait (Because she had no morals, the wicked woman went around hurting everyone he met.) 

13. Surnaturel

Meaning: caused by forces that cannot be explained by science

English: supernatural 

Example: Elle adorait regarder des films surnaturels.(She loved watching supernatural movies.) 

14. Divin

Meaning: connected with a god, or like a god

English: divine

Example: C’était l’humain le plus divin que j’aie jamais rencontré. (He was the most divine human I’d ever met.)

15. Mysterieux

Meaning: strange, not known, or not understood

English: mysterious

Example: Les gens tombent amoureux de manière mystérieuse. (People fall in love in mysterious ways.) 

16. Fantasque

Meaning : over-imaginative and unrealistic

English: fanciful

Example: Grand-mère a raconté des histoires fantaisistes sur les sirènes et les princesses intrépides qui parlaient aux enfants. (Grandma told fanciful tales about talking mermaids and fearless princesses to the kids.)

17. À suspense

Meaning : causing a feeling of excitement or nervousness because you are waiting for something to happen or are uncertain about what is going to happen

English: suspenseful

Example: Le film a eu une fin très suspensive.(The movie had a very suspenseful ending.)

18. Malédiction

Meaning : to say magic words that are intended to bring bad luck to someone

English: curse

Example: Le groupe d’amis semblait être sous une malédiction.(The group of friends seemed to be under a curse.)
