Vocabulary related to gardening in French

1. jardin

Meaning: a piece of land next to and belonging to a house, where flowers and other plants are grown, and often containing an area of grass

English: garden

Example: Avez-vous un jardin dans votre bungalow? (Do you have a garden at your bungalow?)

2. jardinage

Meaning: the job or activity of working in a garden, growing and taking care of the plants, and keeping it attractive

English: gardening

Example: Elle déteste le jardinage. (She hates gardening.)

3. graines

Meaning: a small, round or oval object produced by a plant and from which, when it is planted, a new plant can grow

English: seeds

Example: Elle a gardé des graines de mangue pour ses cheveux et sa peau. (She saved mango seeds for her hair and skin.)

4. creuser

Meaning: to break up and move soil using a tool, a machine, or your hands

English: to dig

Example: Il creuse généralement le jardin car c’est bon pour le sol(He usually digs the garden as it’s good for the soil.)

5. planter

Meaning :to put a plant into the ground or into a container of soil so that it will grow

English: to plant

Example: Il plante un arbre chaque année le jour de son anniversaire. (He plants a tree every year on her birthday.)

6. arroser 

Meaning: to pour water onto plants or the soil that they are growing in

English: to water

Example: N’oubliez pas d’arroser les plantes tous les deux jours. (Don’t forget to water the plants every other day.)

7. cultiver

Meaning: to prepare land and grow crops on it, or to grow a particular crop

English: cultivate

Example: Les agriculteurs y cultivent du riz et du maïs. (The farmers cultivate rice and maize here.)

8. binette

Meaning: a garden tool with a long handle and a short blade used to remove weeds and break up the surface of the ground

English: hoe

Example: À la maison, elle a attrapé la binette et s’est dirigée vers le jardin. (At the house she grabbed the hoe and started for the garden.)

9. pelle

Meaning : a tool consisting of a wide, square metal or plastic blade, usually with slightly raised sides, attached to a handle, for moving loose material such as sand, coal, or snow

English: shovel

Example: Elle a creusé un trou à l’aide d’une pelle. (She dug a hole with the help of a shovel.)

10. fourche

Meaning: a tool with a long handle and three or four points, used for digging and breaking soil into pieces

English: garden fork

Example: La fourche est un instrument de jardinage important. (The garden fork is an important gardening instrument. )

11. hache

Meaning : a tool that has a heavy iron or steel blade at the end of a long wooden handle, used for cutting wood

English: axe

Example: Ils ont utilisé une hache pour abattre l’arbre. (They used an axe to chop down the tree.)

12. arrosoir

Meaning: a container for water with a handle and a long tube used for pouring water onto garden plants

English: watering can

Example: Je ne trouve pas l’arrosoir. (I can’t find the watering can.) 

13. asperseur

Meaning: Organe musculaire creux, qui constitue l’élément moteur central de la circulation du sang

English: sprinkler

Example: Nous n’utilisons pas l’arroseur car il gaspille de l’eau. (We don’t use the sprinkler as it wastes water.) 

14. compost

Meaning: decaying plant material that is added to soil to improve its quality

English: compost

Example: Le compost est en fait la meilleure alternative aux engrais. (Compost is actually the best alternative for fertilizers.)

15. gaule

Meaning: a young tree

English: sapling

Example: Ils ont planté de nombreux gaules le jour de l’environnement. (They planted many saplings on environment day.)
