Vocabulaire lié au droit en anglais

Nous devons être conscients de la loi et de l’ordre qui nous entourent. Par conséquent, si vous prévoyez d’aller dans un endroit où l’on parle l’anglais, ces mots anglais liés au droit vous aideront. Apprenons-les à l’aide de cet article.

1. Attorney

Meaning: a person who has the legal right to act for someone else

French: avocat

She hired the best attorney to fight for her. (Elle a engagé le meilleur avocat pour se battre pour elle.)

2. Case 

Meaning – a matter to be decided by a judge in a law court

French – affaire

He has a strong case by his side. (Il a un affaire solide à ses côtés.)

3. Evidence

Meaning –  objects, documents, official statements, etc. that are used to prove something is true or not true, especially for legal or insurance purposes

French – preuves

Do you have enough evidence to prove him wrong? (Avez-vous suffisamment de preuves pour lui prouver qu’il a tort?)

4. Judge 

Meaning: a person who is in charge of a trial in a court and decides how a person who is guilty of a crime should be punished, or who makes decisions on legal matters

French: –  juge 

She is the first lady judge in years. (Elle est la première dame juge depuis des années.)

5. Jury 

Meaning – a group of people who have been chosen to listen to all the facts in a trial in a law court and to decide if a person is guilty or not guilty, or if a claim has been proved

French – jury

The jury found him guilty. (Le jury l’a déclaré coupable.)

6. Lawsuit 

Meaning – a problem taken to a law court by an ordinary person or an organization rather than the police in order to obtain a legal decision

French – l’action en justice

A lawsuit was filed against him for his wrong trading practices.  (Une poursuite a été intentée contre lui pour ses mauvaises pratiques commerciales.)

7. Lawyer 

Meaning – someone whose job is to give advice to people about the law and speak for them in court

French – avocat 

She wanted to see her lawyer before being questioned. (Elle voulait voir son avocat avant d’être interrogée.)

8. Prosecutor 

Meaning – a legal official who accuses someone of committing a crime, especially in a law court

French – procureur

The prosecutor asked him many questions. (Le procureur lui a posé de nombreuses questions.)

9. Trial 

Meaning – the hearing of statements and showing of objects, etc. in a law court to judge if a person is guilty of a crime or to decide a case or a legal matter

French – procès

She will be going on trial for fraud. (Elle sera jugée pour fraude.)

10. Verdict 

Meaning – an opinion or decision made after judging the facts that are given, especially one made at the end of a trial

French –  verdict

She was delighted when the verdict was in her father’s favour. (Elle était ravie que le verdict soit en faveur de son père.)

11. Witness 

Meaning: a person who sees an event happening, especially a crime or an accident

French – témoin

The witness identified the robber in no time. (Le témoin a identifié le voleur en peu de temps.)

12. Sue 

Meaning- to take legal action against a person or organization, especially by making a legal claim for money because of some harm that they have caused you

French – poursuivre en justice

She sued him for copying her artwork. (Elle l’a poursuivi pour avoir copié ses œuvres.)

13. Plea 

Meaning – an urgent and emotional request

French: plaidoyer

The thief made a plea for mercy. (Le voleur a plaidé pour la miséricorde.)

14. Felony 

Meaning – serious crime that can be punished by one or more years in prison:

French: la félonie

Example: No one believed she would commit such a felony. (Personne ne croyait qu’elle commettrait une félonie.)

15. Defendant 

Meaning – a person in a law case who is accused of having done something illegal

French: défendeur

Example: The defendant was charged with disturbing the peace. (Le défendeur a été accusé d’avoir troublé la paix.)
