1.Mother [ muhth-er ]

Meaning – a female parent

French – mère

Example: My mother cooks amazing food. (Ma mère cuisine une nourriture incroyable.) 

2.Father [fah–th er ]

Meaning –  a male parent

French – père

Example: His father works very hard. (Son père travaille très dur.)

3.Sister [ sis-ter ]

Meaning- a girl or woman who has the same parents as another person

French – sœur

Example: Mary’s sister is a doctor. (La sœur de Mary est médecin.)

4.Brother [ bruhth -er ]

Meaning -a man or boy with the same parents as another person

French –  frère

Example: Tom has a brother to look after. (Tom a un frère à s’occuper.)

5.Grandparents– [ gran-pair-uh nt]

Meaning – the father or mother of a person’s father or mother

French – grands-parents

Example: It’s always a fun time with grandparents. (C’est toujours un moment amusant avec les grands-parents.)

6.Uncle – [uhng-kuh l ]

Meaning – the brother of someone’s mother or father, or the husband of someone’s aunt or uncle

French – oncle

Example: Jack’s uncle always gets him gifts. (L’oncle de Jack lui reçoit toujours des cadeaux.)

7.Aunt – [ahnt ]

Meaning -the sister of someone’s father or mother, or the wife of someone’s uncle or aunt

French – tante

Example: Jill’s aunt loves to shop. (La tante de Jill aime faire du shopping.)

8.Cousin[ kuhz–uh n ]

Meaning – a child of a person’s aunt or uncle, or, more generally, a distant (= not close) relation

French – cousin

Example: I went out with my cousin. (Je suis sorti avec mon cousin.)

9.Nuclear Family – [noo-klee-er fam–uh-lee ]

Meaning – a family consisting of two parents and their children, but not including aunts, uncles, grandparents, etc.

French – famille nucléaire

Example: Tina loves living in a nuclear family.(Tina aime vivre dans une famille nucléaire.)

10.Extended Family [ ik-sten-did fam–uh-lee ]

Meaning -a family unit that includes grandmothers, grandfathers, aunts, and uncles, etc. in addition to parents and children

French – famille élargie 

Example: Kathy was looking forward to meeting her extended family at the party. (Kathy avait hâte de rencontrer sa famille élargie à la fête.)

11.Relatives[rel–uh-tiv ]

Meaning – a member of your family

French – un membre de la famille

Example: She met many relatives at the wedding.

12.Siblings – [ sib-ling ]

Meaning – a brother or sister

French – frères et sœurs 

Example: Her siblings always try to make fun of her. (Ses frères et sœurs essaient toujours de se moquer d’elle.)

13.Child – [chahyld]

Meaning – a boy or girl from the time of birth until he or she is an adult, or a son or daughter of any age

French – enfant

Example: They pamper their child a lot.(Ils chouchoutent beaucoup leur enfant.)

14. Marriage – [mar-ij]

Meaning – a legally accepted relationship between two people in which they live together, or the official ceremony that results in this

French – mariage

Example: They had a love marriage in the presence of their family.(Ils ont eu un mariage d’amour en présence de leur famille.)

15.Divorce [dih-vawrs]

Meaning – an official or legal process to end a marriage

French – divorce

Example: A divorce led them to be better friends. (Un divorce les a amenés à être de meilleurs amis.)

16.Single Parent– [sing-guhl pair–uh nt ]

Meaning – someone who has a child or children but no husband, wife, or partner who lives with them

French – parent seule

Example: As a single parent, she did some incredible job. (En tant que parent seule, elle a fait un travail incroyable.)

17.Foster[ faw-ster ]

Meaning – to take care of a child, usually for a limited time, without being the child’s legal parent

French – prendre soin d’un enfant, généralement pour une durée limitée, sans être le parent légal de l’enfant

Example: Jack decided to foster a few orphans till they were 18. (Jack a décidé de garder quelques orphelins jusqu’à l’âge de 18 ans.)

18.Husband– [huhz-buhnd]

Meaning –  the man that you are married to

French – mari

Example: Marie’s husband gave her many surprises. (Le mari de Marie lui réserve de nombreuses surprises.)

19.Wife – [wahyf]

Meaning – the woman that you are married to

French – femme

Example: Kyle’s wife was very beautiful. (La femme de Kyle était très belle.)

20.Twin[ twin ]

Meaning – either of two children born to the same mother on the same occasion

French – jumeau/jumelle

Example: She has a twin sister. (Elle a une sœur jumelle.)
